چکیده

Although existing educational systems are based on various learning theories, these theories are rarely used when developing feedback. Our research is based on the theory of learning from performance errors, which suggests that feedback should provide long and short-term learning advantages through revision of faulty knowledge in the context of learners’ errors. We hypothesized that principled, theory-based feedback would have a positive impact on learning. To test the hypothesis we performed an experiment with EERTutor, an intelligent tutoring system that teaches database design. The results of the study support our hypothesis: the students who learned from theory-based feedback had a higher learning rate than their peers. We conclude that learning theories should be used to formulate design guidelines for effective feedback.

Analysing High-Level Help-Seeking Behaviour in ITSs

In this paper, we look at initial results of data mining students’ help-seeking behaviour in two ITSs: SQL-Tutor and EER-Tutor. We categorised help given by these tutors into high-level (HLH) and lowlevel help (LLH), depending on the amount of help given. Each student was grouped into one of ten groups based on the frequency with which they used HLH. Learning curves were then plotted for each g...

Providing formative assessment to students solving multipath engineering problems with complex arrangements of interacting parts: an intelligent tutor approach

Problems faced by engineering students involve multiple pathways to solution. Students rarely receive effective formative feedback on handwritten homework. This paper examines the potential for computer-based formative assessment of student solutions to multi-path engineering problems. In particular, a cognitive tutor approach is adopted and tested out on problems of truss analysis, studied in ...

Computer Tutors Can Reduce Student Errors and Promote Solution Efficiency for Complex Engineering Problems

An ability to solve complex problems, for which a variety of solution paths are possible, is an important goal in engineering education. While feedback is critical to learning, hand grading of homework rarely provides effective, timely feedback on attempts to solve complex problems. Such feedback is also unfeasible in distance education contexts. A technology, based on the approach of cognitive...

A Tutor for Using Dynamic Memory in C++

1 Amruth N. Kumar, Ramapo College of New Jersey, Mahwah, NJ, 07430, [email protected] Abstract  Using dynamic memory has been a source of frustration for Computer Science and Engineering students programming in C++. We designed a tutor to help students understand dynamic memory and avoid the pitfalls of using it. The tutor automatically generates problems on dynamic memory usage, and provides ...

Facilitating Adaptive Tutorial Dialogues in EER-Tutor

EER-Tutor is a constraint-based intelligent tutoring system that teaches conceptual database design. Students are provided a problem solving environment to design a data model for a real world scenario. We enhanced EER-Tutor with adaptive tutorial dialogues to facilitate discussion of mistakes in a student solution. The dialogues discuss errors in the current problem context as well as the rele...
